Responsibilities

The Buckingham County Treasurer is a locally elected constitutional officer, as set forth by the Virginia Constitution of 1870.  The Treasurer's Office is responsible for ensuring that local funds are collected, received, invested, safeguarded and properly disbursed. The treasurer is a constitutional officer who reports directly to the people of Buckingham County.

The treasurer is directly responsible for tax collection and provides general oversight and custody of all other funds collected by the county including:

  • Court, Sheriff and Clerk fees
  • License taxes
  • Personal property taxes
  • Real estate taxes
  • State estimated taxes
  • Water and sewage charges

Legal Authority

Legal authority for the treasurer's duties and responsibilities is governed by the Constitution of Virginia, the Code of Virginia, local ordinances, case law, court decisions and opinions of the Attorney General.

Dates to Remember

April 15: Deadline for displaying current vehicle decal
June 5th: First half of real estate taxes due
December 5th: Second half of real estate taxes due AND personal property taxes due.

A fee of $1.00 for transactions under $40 and 2.5% on amounts greater will be charged for all credit card payments. These fees go directly to the credit card processor and not to the Treasurer's Office. You must have your tax account number and amount of the tax owed to process a transaction online. Please call 434-969-4744 if you have a delinquency in order to obtain the current amount owed.

Refund Policy: All tax payments received are applied to the indicated tax account. Refunds are not typically allowed. In the case of an error or overpayment, refund requests may be submitted to the Buckingham County Treasurer (434) 969-4744. There is no refund for the convenience fee

LATE PAYMENT INFORMATION

DUE DATE

Real estate due dates are June 5 and December 5, and personal property tax is due December 5.  Payments for all tax must be paid or postmarked on or before the due date. The due dates for supplemental billings are stated on the notice.

LATE PAYMENT PENALTY and INTEREST

The late payment PENALTY is ten percent (10%) of the tax amount not paid or postmarked by the due date. INTEREST, at ten percent annually (10%), is assessed on the unpaid tax amount plus the penalty beginning on the day following the due date.  Interest begins to accrue on the first day of the following month and continues thereafter until paid in full (Code of Virginia of 1950, as amended, § 58.1-3916).

PERSONAL PROPERTY COLLECTION METHODS

The normal due date for all personal property tax is December 5 of the tax year. A late payment penalty is required by law for all untimely payments (Code of Virginia of 1950, as amended, §§ 58.1-9 and 58.1-3916). Please refer to
