Efficient and quality transportation enhances growth, physical appearance, and quality of life. In and around Buckingham County, Virginia there are many highways, interstates, and major roads. Through the Virginia Department of Transportation, Buckingham maintains its roads and highways, keeping the county's transportation infrastructure safe, productive, and resourceful.

Some highways in Buckingham County include U.S. Route 15, which starts in central New York and travels 794 miles to southern South Carolina, and U.S. 60, which starts in Virginia and runs 2,670 miles, ending in Arizona. Buckingham County has three Virginia primary highways: VA 20, VA 56, and VA 24. Route 20 starts in Dillwyn and runs north and ends in the Fredericksburg area, Route 56 begins near Buckingham Court House and runs northwest ending in Fairfield. Route 24 begins at Mount Rush (the geographic center of Virginia) and travels southwest ending in Stewartsville. There are numerous Virginia secondary highways in the county.

There are also many major highways that are just outside of Buckingham. To mention a few: U.S. Route 460 that runs a total of 655 miles from Norfolk, Virginia to Frankfort, Kentucky. From Buckingham County, U.S. 460 is approximately 20 minutes south. Also, U.S. Interstate 64 travels 960 miles from Chesapeake, Virginia to O'Fallon, Missouri. From Buckingham, I-64 is about an hour away. Also, Zion's Crossroads, the intersection of U.S. 15 and U.S. 250 and the I-64 interchange, is only about 50 minutes away.

Airports/Aviation

There are several airports in the area, all within a 90 minute drive of Buckingham County:

Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport- located off of U.S. 29 in Albemarle County. This is a commercial service airport that offers non-stop flights to and from New York/LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Washington/Dulles, Atlanta, and Cincinnati. Major carriers that provide service to the airport include Delta, United Express, and US Airways.

Lynchburg Regional Airport- located in the City of Lynchburg off of U.S. 460. Carriers that provide service to the airport include Delta Connection/Atlantic Southeast Airlines and US Airways. The airport offers 18 daily arrivals and departures. They provide commercial and general aviation services.

Richmond International Airport- located in Richmond, Virginia, the airport currently has eight air carriers with non-stop flights to over 20 destinations and connecting flights to destinations around the world. Nearly 2.9 million passengers used the airport in 2005 and that number continues to grow.

Farmville Regional Airport- located only 30 minutes from Buckingham County. This airport is not a commercial airport, but a general aviation airport. The airport is equipped with a 4,400 foot paved, lighted runway and automated weather system. Hangers, fuel, and instrument ratings are available as well.

Motor Freight Carriers

There are numerous freight carriers that provide service to Buckingham County. Some include Overnite, Estes, and Wilson.

Rail Service

The Buckingham Branch Railroad Company (BB) is proud to be a part of the national transportation system provided by short line railroads.  Today, in America, short line and regional railroads operate nearly 50,000 miles of track accounting for 30% of the national rail system. They own 17 miles of rail in Buckingham County and lease an additional 200 miles of track between Richmond and Clifton Forge, Virginia. The BB hauls products worldwide, connecting with CSXT and Norfolk Southern Railroads. The BB operates on a five day per week schedule and as needed outside that schedule. This means of transportation is a link to the rest of the world, hauling any product worldwide.  The BB is customer focused and is active in sales and marketing and operates at the industry standard.  It provides a unique opportunity for Buckingham County in offering direct rail service and access to world wide markets.  For customer information visit their web site at www.buckinghambranch.com or call 434-983-3300.

The Buckingham Branch Railroad, through the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society Inc., offers train excursions at various times of the year.  These excursions are held  in the Spring, the Fall and just prior to Christmas.
