In Buckingham County, there are numerous attractions to see, explore, and learn about! Here are just a few attractions that we offer to visitors (a complete listing can be seen by visiting our History & Attractions webpage):
- The home of Carter G. Woodson, Jr., father of African American History, located in New Canton (Northeastern Buckingham). Dr. Woodson was an African American historian, journalist, educator, and author. He was the founder of Black History Month as well. For more information on Carter G. Woodson, click here. - The home of famous Revolutionary War Solider Peter Francisco, Locust Grove, still stands in Southern Buckingham County, in the Curdsville area. Peter Francisco was a hero of the American Revolution, nicknamed the "Virginia Giant" or the "Giant of the Revolution." For more information on Peter Francisco, click here. - Historic Buckingham Inc. has established a Historic Village that is located on Lee Wayside Road off of James Anderson Highway. This unique village contains numerous historic buildings and establishments, such as tobacco houses, old post offices, slate quarry offices, historic cemeteries, and much more! - The Historic Buckingham County Courthouse was originally built in 1822 and designed by Thomas Jefferson, through correspondence with his friend Col. John Yancey of Buckingham. The Courthouse burned in 1869, destroying all deeds, wills, and other records kept in the Clerk's Office. For more information on the County Courthouse, click here. The Courthouse is located on 13049 West James Anderson Highway.
