Overview

Buckingham County has an extensive and comprehensive solid waste and recycling program in place for county residents. The director of the department oversees all operations of the department, including proper disposal of all wastes, maintaining a county-wide recycling program, and other duties as prescribed by the County Administrator. Recycling Information

Please note that all facilities are only for household use of residents of Buckingham County. Contractors and businesses should not use these facilities, but go directly to a landfill.

Recycling tips:

  1. Junk Vehicles:  for information, call the County’s Administrator’s Office at (434) 969-4242 or email: camos@co.buckingham.state.va.us
  2. Appliances:  refrigerator, freezers, air-conditioners-or any appliance with Freon, place in designated areas.  Other appliances may be put in metals container.
  3. Plastic Shopping Bags:  Food Lion in Dillwyn and Farmers Food in Dillwyn and other grocery stores accept used bags
  4. Glass:  glass is separated by color.  DO NOT include window glass, baking dishes, drinking glasses, or canning jars.
  5. Construction Materials:  NO CONTRACTORS!! Residents only.  Items to be placed in the construction materials containers are furniture, mattresses, springs, masonry, lumber, insulation, sheet rock, shingles, carpet, tile, etc.
  6. Paper:  include newspaper, magazines, catalogs, light cardboard and mail. Please package materials in paper bags.
  7. Medicines:  Keep away from children.  Flush medicines down the toilet.
  8. Syringes:  Put in a capped milk jug and place with household waste in a dumpster
  9. Clothing:  There is now clothing recycling containers at all major solid waste recycling centers in the County.  Please put unwanted clothing and shoes into these containers.
  10. Aluminum:  A business buys aluminum from citizens bimonthly on the 3rd Saturday, from 9 a.m. to12 p.m. during the months of January, March, May, July, September and November

Road kill:  for removal of dead animals off of right-of-way or state maintained roads, phone VDOT at 434-983-2017.

NO LEAVES & BRUSH IN CONTAINERS.  THEY NEED TO BE COMPOSTED.
NO TIRES AT ANYTIME.

Rt. 655 Site (Glenmore Rd. off Rt. 20)
Rt. 56 Site (this site is monitored by cameras only)
 Green boxes for household waste (garbage), appliances, and metal, newspapers, junk mail, magazines, construction materials and aluminum, clothes & shoes, cardboard in correct container
Buckingham Recycling also has glass recycling.

Related Concerns:

  • Fire danger: cigarettes can cause fires. Keep cigarettes in your ash tray.
  • Open burning: outdoor burning is regulated by the State of Virginia. For information, call the Department of Forestry at 434.969.4211.
  • Open trucks: please secure your trash so that is does not blow out of the truck bed.
  • Road kill: for removal of dead animals off of right-of-way or state maintained roads, phone VDOT ar 434.983.2017.

Other Information

  • Recycling and the law: Virginia law HB 1743 requires that each county in the state recycle 25% of all its solid waste.
  • Littering and the law: illegal dumping and littering may result in a fine up to $1,000 and up to 12 months imprisonment as stipulated in the Buckingham County Solid Waste Ordinance.
  • County facts and figures: the monthly average from household waste alone is about 470 tons. The cost of land filling this waste is $40 per ton.

Anti-Litter Task Force

New members of the Anti-litter Task Force

The Anti-litter task force was created by order of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors on February 5, 1979. The Board of Supervisors saw a great need for a task force to eradicate the growing trash problem in the county.
Original members of the task force include Spencer Adams (who served as chairman), Helen Saxon, Jim Blevins, Edward LeSueur, Thomas Hutchenson, Thelma Ross, Garnett Shumaker, Meade Garrett, Frank Knott, Jr., Virginia Bailey, and Harry Bryant, Jr.
Since it's inception, the Buckingham County Anti-litter task force has received numerous awards at the county and state level:

  • For example, in 1991 the Clean Virginia Award of Excellence;
  • in 1990 the county won the Litter Prevention Award of Merit from the Virginia Department of Waste Management;
  • in 1983, 1984, and 1990 the task force and the county received the Governor's Clean Virginia Award;
  • an Honorable Mention from the Virginia Attorney General on behalf of the Keep Virginia Beautiful Organization;
  • in 1992, the task force received a certificate of recognition from Governor L. Douglas Wilder.
