Buckingham-Appomattox State Forest, with its 19,687 acres, offers outdoor recreation to local residents. Holiday Lake State Park is located within the state forest and offers camping, picnicking, swimming, boating and hiking within the park's boundaries. For more information, call (434) 248-6308.
James River State Park, with 1500 acres along the James River, offers picnicking, primitive camping, RV camping with a bathhouse, nearly 17 miles of trails for hiking, hiking and horseback riding, and three miles of river frontage with two boat ramps. In addition, the park offers wheelchair accessible facilities including a 1/4 mile paved and boardwalk trail around one of three fishing ponds. New, luxurious 2,3, and 6 bedroom cabins are opening in the Spring of 2007. James River State Park is located in the western tip of the county, across the river from Nelson County.
The park is home to James River State Park Outdoor Adventures, providing complete canoe livery services including canoe, kayak, tube and bicycle rentals as well as shuttle services and a livery store.
James River State Park offers six picnic shelters available for reservation. An amphitheater, formed by natural landscaping, seats 2,000 and offers a lighted 25'by 30'stage.
Interpretive programs include guided canoe floats, wagon rides, campfire programs and more. Recurring annual offerings include Bluegrass Under the Stars, an annual Fall Harvest Festival, and the James River Raft Race.

This park is located seven miles north of Rt. 60 on Rt. 605 in Buckingham County. Entrance to the park is located at the intersection of Rt.
605 and Rt. 606.
The Horsepen Lake Management Area,
operated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, is situated near Rt. 60, off of Rt. 638. The area totals 3,065 acres of mostly forested land centered by an 18 acre lake, and offers fishing, hunting, boating, hiking and picnicking. The Bear Creek State Park of Cumberland, with 460 acres, is also open to the public. The scenic Blue Ridge Mountains are a short driving distance away.
Local parks include the Gene Dixon Memorial Park and Dillwyn Park. Both parks offer tennis and other sporting opportunities. Baseball fields are available at Dixon Park, soccer in Dillwyn, and golf at two area clubs.
The Appomattox and James Rivers provide excellent canoeing and kayaking activities, along with great fishing, in one of the most scenic areas of Virginia. [top of page]
