Buckingham County Public Schools (www.bchs.k12.va.us)

New middle school

The Buckingham County Public School Division offers a quality, unique, and long-lasting education to its students. The division currently educates approximately 2,289 pupils with a teacher to pupil ratio of 13:1. With a small ratio, teachers can focus more on their students, working with them according to their needs. The total school division personnel ratio is 9:1 (nine personnel per one pupil).

According to 2004-2005 statistics, only 18 or 1.65% of pupils dropped out of school, of grades 7-12 in 2005. Out of the 2004-2005 graduating class, 86% of students either earned an advanced studies diploma or standard diploma. Out of the 138 graduating in 2005, 50% are continuing their education at a four-year institution, two-year institution, or another type of educational institution. Thirty-eight percent of students either joined the military or became employed.

There are a total of seven public schools in Buckingham County: one high school (Buckingham County High), two primary schools (Dillwyn Primary and Buckingham Primary), two elementary schools (Dillwyn Elementary and Gold Hill), one middle school (Buckingham County Middle), and a career and technical education school (Buckingham Vocational Center). Each school has a principal and several administrators who carry out the daily operations of the school.

The Buckingham County School Board oversees the operation of the division. The Board members are elected by the registered voters in his or her voting district. The Board appoints a superintendent, who acts as chief administrative officer of the Division, executing the day-to-day tasks of the division. The Board adopts a fiscal budget annually.
