At the intersection
Highway 15 and Gold Mine street, or state route 1010, a marker signifies the
importance of the area and the name of the street. This marker, erected by
the Virginia Historic Society, describes the gold rush that occurred in the
area before the California gold rush in 1849. The area was the most notable
in terms of gold before the rush occurred in California. A mine named Morrow
Mine, which was located in the area, was one of the earliest mines that
opened in which gold mining was employed. Many un-worked mines lie nearby.
There were a number of worked and un-worked goldmines in the area, hence the
name Goldmine Street.
The historic marker which signifies the importance of
the street, located at both ends of Gold Mine street (or 1010).
At the intersection of Goldmine and Oak (or 1010 and
15) lies the historical marker.
